"description": "UPDATE - April 1st 2019:\r\nUnfortunately Sharlotte the kea has been found to have VERY high blood lead levels. Please keep an eye out for her if you're near Homer Tunnel or anywhere in the Milford Sound area of Fiordland. Please contact us or DOC Te Anau if you see her so she can be caught and treated for lead poisoning. She will be released again into the wild once she is healthy (usually after a few weeks).\r\n\r\nThis kea, banded at Homer Tunnel in March 2019, is named after the late Sharlotte Stainsby who was in the DOC partnership team in Dunedin for many years. Sadly Sharlotte passed away early 2018 at 41 years young. One of Sharlotte’s very last trips was to Fiordland where she visited Doubtful Sound. Sharlotte was stoic with a dry sense of humour and a determination of kea proportions. \r\n\r\nHopefully we can track kea Sharlotte’s whereabouts and adventures.",

"description": "This young male kea is named Gottlieb in memory of the late Gottlieb Braun-Elwert who sadly died in 2008. Gottlieb was one of the most well-known and respected mountain guides in New Zealand.\r\n\r\nTogether with his wife Anne Braun-Elwert, Gottlieb set up Alpine Recreation in 1981. Gottlieb, an IFMGA qualified mountain and ski guide, led many people on journeys in the mountains over the years, ski-touring and climbing, particularly around Aoraki/Mt Cook. One notable regular client and close friend was previous Prime Minister Helen Clark. \r\n\r\nOriginally from Germany, Gottlieb was formerly a nuclear physicist who emigrated to New Zealand in 1978. He climbed Mt Cook 26 times and had pioneered many of the country's ski tours. He was the first person to climb all of New Zealand's 3000m peaks in one winter season, and with his family he took both daughters to the summit of Mt Cook, each becoming the youngest person to climb the mountain (at age 14). Gottlieb also made numerous achievements overseas. \r\n\r\nGottlieb was passionate about the mountain environment he worked in, campaigning for conservation issues as a member of the Canterbury - Aoraki Conservation Board from 2003 to 2008. In 2010 he had a mountain named after him in the Two Thumb range near Tekapo.\r\n\r\nThe kea team was privileged to visit Caroline Hut (Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park) - the hard work of the Braun-Elwert family - for a kea conservation field trip during October 2019 and banded two of the kea seen there. Sadly, both tested high for lead poisoning (though lead materials are not present on this hut). Here, Gottlieb and (Beau F) were banded and now we hope that visitors to the area will see and report these kea. \r\n\r\nGottlieb and family have strong ties to this place where his spirit lives on and his memory will always be alive through kea Gottlieb (and friends) who soar above the mountains here keeping a watchful eye on things!",

"description": "Tuhura (meaning \"explore\") was banded at Deaths Corner in April 2017 as a fledgling. Valarie, Jane Goodall and Hopey were all banded at a similar time to Tuhura and some of them are likely to be his siblings.\r\n\r\nTuhura's name was chosen after a naming poll by Active Adventures who are one of the major sponsors of this project. \r\n\r\nUpdate August/September 2018: Wondering why Tuhura - one of the most highly sighted kea - hasn't been seen for a while? He spends a lot of his time in the carpark overlooking the Otira Viaduct. In late August, he was hit by a car or had some sort of collision accident in the carpark and was found by the team looking very concussed, injured and worse for wear. We took him into the South Island Wildlife Hospital straight away and he has been treated by the wonderful team there. He has had to have eye surgery and now one eye has been removed. We'll provide more information as it comes to light.\r\n\r\nUpdate: October 2018: Tuhura is back! After amazing treatment by Dr Pauline and team after his accident, Tuhura was released back into the wild in mid October. He has regularly been seen by visitors and seems to be coping well with his missing eye, compensating in other ways. Please take special care around this bird as his responses are still compromised as he gets used to living with just one eye.",
